Perforated eardrum for Alonso

Xabi Alonso was unable to fly back to Madrid last night, after suffering a perforated eardrum playing against Valencia.

The midfielder was able to finish Sunday evening’s 3-2 win at Mestalla in Week 17 for Real Madrid, having suffered the injury when caught by Jeremy Mathieu in challenging for an aerial ball.

Madrid have confirmed in a statement on their official website that examination after the match made clear the player had suffered a perforated eardrum, so he was unable to return to the capital by plane.

The 32-year-old remains at a clinic in Valencia pending developments.
