‘Sevilla want to excite the fans’

Unai Emery has promised that Sevilla will do their best in the Copa del Rey this year, but that Racing Santander represent dangerous opposition.

Last year’s beaten semi-finalists enter this year’s edition of the competition in the Round of 32 with a two-legged tie against Racing, with the first leg scheduled for Friday evening at El Sardinero.

For Los Nervionenses’ Coach, doing well in the competition is important.

“The Cup is not a normal competition, because Sevilla have done very much in it in recent seasons and we have to go as far as possible and take a journey to excite our fans,” Emery has told reporters today.

“We are facing an opponent with players worthy of a higher League than they are currently in [Segunda B]. They are representing a major city and they will also have ambitions of progressing, they will play with the intention of winning. We have the utmost respect for what Racing are and will face them aware of this.

“Will I make changes? Some players who have played regularly have not been selected in the squad, and there are others who have been called up who have been regular starters.

“We will select a competitive team, we will have some players able to earn more minutes, but without the team losing performance.

“We have to remember that we are the away team and it will not be easy to win in Racing’s field.”
