‘Villarreal have Copa ambition’

Manu Trigueros has outlined that Villarreal hold ambition to do well in the Copa del Rey this season, as well as ‘take back fourth’ in La Liga.

The Castellon outfit are this Friday starting their Cup campaign in the Round of 32 with a first leg clash at home to fellow Primera Division outfit Elche, before 11 days later heading out to the Martinez Valero for the return leg.

For one of their midfielders, Villarreal are taking the competition seriously, having not progressed through a round in it since 2010-11.

“The Cup is a great competition in which we have the ambition of being able to progress,” Trigueros has mused this week.

“We know that it is key to keep a clean sheet and to win the first game at home to then go to Elche with a good result. The key is not conceding.

“Last year we went out of the Cup at the first hurdle, but this season we hope to do better and to progress further.

“All the players are really looking forward to the game and to doing well, whoever plays.”

The Yellow Submarine enter the competition on the back of conceding fourth place in La Liga to Athletic Bilbao after drawing at home to Malaga in Week 15 and seeing the Basques defeat Barcelona.

“Anyone would have signed up for the situation that we are currently in. But we are ambitious and want to take back fourth.

“We are on a good line of form and despite the draw with Malaga, we remain confident and eager to do well in the Cup too.”
