Bale asked Beckham for advice

Gareth Bale has revealed he received advice from several English players before joining Real Madrid last summer, including David Beckham.

Apart from the former Manchester United man, Bale also spoke to Michael Owen, Steve McManaman and Jonathan Woodgate, who all made big-money moves to the Santiago Bernabeu during their playing careers.

“They all called me to give me advice and wish me luck and to be honest I was grateful,” admitted Bale in an interview at the launch of EA SPORTS FIFA 14 for Xbox One and Playstation 4.

“I trained for a while with David at Tottenham, so I know him well, and we talked about Real Madrid. I also spoke to Jonathan, my teammate at Spurs, who mentioned the club from time to time, as well as Steve, who I met when doing an interview.

“They’ve all experienced the situation I am in and offered me good advice, of which I took note, and that is helping me a lot now.”

The Welshman was asked his thoughts about the world record transfer fee that took him to the Spanish capital and also how he gets on with Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I never thought about it because I just concentrate on playing football. Whatever Madrid paid for me is not my business. I just want to be the best player I can be.

“There’s no rivalry with Cristiano, neither with him nor anybody else. On the contrary, we get on very well and from the time I arrived he has been incredible towards me, helping me both on and off the field.”
