Simeone: La Liga is still boring

Diego Simeone said he is convinced La Liga is still boring following his Atletico Madrid side’s 7-0 thrashing of neighbours Getafe.

In addition, despite Los Rojiblancos’ superb start to the season, the Argentine does still not consider the capital club one of the favourites for the title.

“I remain convinced La Liga is boring. There is little opportunity for teams other than Barcelona or Real Madrid, but our players have put in some massive work and we’ll see what happens.

“I’m referring to what has happened in the last decade. We can’t compare to them.

“Against Getafe the reality was that we were strong against a team with a man short, so it doesn’t make us believe we are better than we are,” Simeone told reporters.

Asked about Atleti President Enrique Cerezo’s comments that he is the club’s Sir Alex Ferguson, the tactician confirmed that right now he is only thinking about Tuesday’s Champions League game.

“That’s my only ambition at the moment. I don’t live for what happened today to make me more or less happy.

“We have a championship where we need to take things game by game and play what amounts to a final every Sunday.

“We face difficulties every week and when there are maybe five, six or seven games left we’ll see where we are then.

“I’m looking to make the players I have even stronger. The characteristics and history of La Liga doesn’t bother me. What I do care about is Atletico Madrid’s history.

“I’ve always said I want a fast, intense team. That’s all, nothing more.”

Simeone believed Juan Valera’s dismissal before the break was a turning point.

“I think his sending off favoured us. We took advantage of it and turned it into a comfortable night.

“Even so, it wasn’t comfortable at the start, but with a man advantage we overwhelmed them,” he concluded.
