Lopetegui: Spain struggled at first

Julen Lopetegui conceded that Spain’s Under-21s struggled at first to get into their qualifier against Albania on Monday.

Yesterday afternoon saw La Rojita maintain their 100 per cent record in European Under-21 Championship qualification with a 2-0 win at the Ruzhdi Bizhuta Stadium in Elbasan thanks to second half goals from Iker Muniain and Gerard Deulofeu.

However, it was not plain sailing for Spain, as their Coach conceded post-match.

“It was a match as we expected, very difficult, in which the state of the field of play proposed another approach and we struggled in finding this,” Lopetegui told the Spanish Football Federation’s official website afterwards.

“But I think that in the second half we competed well, playing more into space than to the feet and at the end, with concentration, we have been much better than Albania.

“There is an important caveat to our game and that is to play to space and support.

“During the first half we have not been together and then in the other half we were, and that has helped us to create many chances and we have had more opportunities than those that earned us the win in the end.”
