Mascherano ‘happiest at Barca’

Javier Mascherano has mused on how his ‘happiest years’ of his career so far have come at River Plate and then at Barcelona.

The Argentine is into a fourth season at the Camp Nou, where he has been converted into a centre-back, and in marking 10 years in the game, he has reflected on how the Catalans have provided him his fondest memories.

“The reality is that I have lived the happiest years of my life here,” Mascherano has told Sport today.

“If I were asked about the most beautiful years of this decade as a professional, I would say the two at River Plate and the three here.

“At River because that was my home, for the ambition of one day being able to play at the club where I grew up, where I lived and where I developed.

“And here, in Barcelona, because the ambition became reality in coming to a club and a team as wonderful as this, and to have the possibility to win titles, in Europe where I had worked hard to get to.”
