Martinez: Distance doesn’t matter

Javi Martinez has mused that Spain’s players do not mind how far they may have to travel, as representing their country is their motivation.

La Roja are spending the November international break in Africa for games against Equatorial Guinea and South Africa, continuing a recent tradition of away days across the far reaches of the globe.

Whilst following on from trips Ecuador, Panama and Puerto Rico in recent months, Martinez believes that the miles travelled is nothing to complain about.

“We travel many, many miles, but the ambition of coming surpasses everything,” the Bayern Munich man commented to reporters today.

“Many times we have said that we do not care where we play as to be involved with the team is the pinnacle.

“Africa? Whenever we have come here it has been very special, whilst there are many people here with Spanish roots. We have had a lot of affection.

“We will face difficulty against Equatorial Guinea, for them it will be a party and for us also, of course, and we will try to win.”

The midfielder mused on La Roja’s chances of retaining their world title next summer in Brazil.

“After six years of winning the European Championships, the World Cup and reaching the final of the Confederations Cup, logically we will be favourites.

“But, there are many strong teams, I play in Germany and Germany have a great team with many young players.”
