Villa: Competition is fierce

David Villa has conceded that he will have to ‘battle’ for his place in the Spain squad ahead of the World Cup.

La Roja play two friendlies against Equatorial Guinea and South Africa this month, and the striker has admitted that everyone will have to perform to book a place on the plane to Brazil next summer.

“There’s competition for a place in every position,” he told reporters at the unveiling of Spain’s new kit.

“During the past few years we’ve seen several good players been omitted because there just isn’t room for everyone.

“The competition to secure a place is fierce and continues every day. We have to battle with each other to gain a place in the list and try to achieve something important again.

“What we did in South Africa wasn’t easy. We’ve got a lot of work to do before the tournament starts. We have the potential to triumph again”.
