‘Sevilla need win for confidence’

Unai Emery has reflected that Sevilla need to start winning to rectify their current situation and for the confidence it can bring.

Los Nervionenses have slipped in the table for consecutive defeats to Real Madrid and Celta Vigo and have lost five times already in La Liga, pushing their Coach under early-season scrutiny.

“The team needs to win in order to gain confidence,” commented Emery on Sevilla’s in-house television channel this week.

“We have a five-point deficit, because with 18 points on the board we would be in another way, and would be a growing team, so we need to start scoring threes soon.

“Our idea is to go out and win games and we will not give up on that, because I consider myself someone with a winning spirit.

“It is true that we have not been consistent and that we need to make some adjustments because we need the points, but this will be without giving up our style.

“A team defends well if it attacks well and it attacks well if it defends well.

“Is the squad good enough? I am delighted with those that are here. You cannot develop a year inside three days and, although the results are needed and we are concerned, we are aware that we need a bit of calm and patience.

“One of the strengths of the team should be in midfield. That role has been given to Rakitic as  a consequence of an idea developed with Kondogbia and Medel.

“When these two players left, we have had to find others to do the same work. There are few that are worth €33m. To reorganise and continue working to the same idea, it takes a while for the players who we are trying to replace them with.

“These players have to reach the same value as those who have gone, but that cannot be done overnight. Rakitic is the one player who can do both attack and defend.

“All creative aspects that Rakitic may be involved in are important to the team. From here, we are looking for those around Rakitic to work and assist in what he does, as Rakitic cannot do everything.”
