Malaga have confirmed that they have signed youth team graduate Sergi Darder to a new three-and-a-half-year deal.

Reports during last week were there the club were keen to sign the 19-year-old to improved terms, as reward for his regular involvement in the first team having been promoted from the youth side in the summer, and to increase his buyout clause from €3m.

Monday has seen the Anchovies announce a new contract has been agreed, to commit the player to La Rosaleda until the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

“This is a very special day for me,” midfielder Darder has commented to reporters today in reaction.

“I’d like to thank everyone who had faith in me as a player from a very young age, particularly [Malaga academy director] Manuel Casanova, Malaga, and of course, Bernd Schuster.

“When I first started pre-season training, I never knew I’d have such an amazing opportunity. This is what I’ve been working for all this time.

“Malaga really has given me everything.  I’m so thankful to the club for where I am today, and I’d like to remain here as long as I can. I’ll always be grateful to Malaga.

“I’m going to continue working hard, I’m 19 years old and have a lot of room for improvement. If I get a chance to play for my country, that would be incredible, but I’m focused on giving my all to Malaga.

“If I’m selected for the Spain line-up again, I’d be over the moon. With regards to the new project, it’s clear that the club is focusing on the younger players within La Academia, on a long-term basis.

“The team needs to adapt to be the best it can be, and over time Malaga CF will be fighting for a top spot in the League.”
