Schuster: Espanyol our opportunity

Bernd Schuster has identified Malaga’s trip out to Espanyol as their opportunity to put right recent form, including a 5-0 defeat to Celta Vigo.

The Anchovies’ heavy defeat in front of their own fans to the Galicians at the weekend sees them head into Week 11’s midweek round under scrutiny for a run of three consecutive defeats.

For their Coach, Tuesday evening’s trip out to Cornella-El Prat presents an opportunity to put things right.

“This game is the best way of putting the Celta defeat behind us and focus on returning to winning ways,” Schuster told reporters this week in his pre-game conference.

“We are determined to change the recent run of results and perform to the best of our capability. This game will give us a good chance to turn things around.

“A 0-5 result is not surprising. The team was convinced they could perform under par and still win. We need to give every match 100 per cent or more.

“Winning appears to be a very difficult thing for us to do. We lacked intensity and the right attitude in the last match, and I’m as angry as the players are.

“Losing three games in a row hasn’t happened often for me, but it’s the way in which we lost that annoys me the most. We didn’t give it our all. It certainly wasn’t our day.

“I still haven’t seen some of the players I want to see perform. We’ve got everyone available in the squad, except Flavio.

“If some of the players don’t make the most of their opportunity, then I’ll give the others a chance. It’s crucial we change our intensity of game play and our attitude on the pitch.”
