Michu: My greatest achievement

Michu has reflected on how he aims to make the most of the opportunity with the Spain squad, as he describes his call-up as his ‘greatest achievement’.

The 27-year-old Swansea City striker has been called up to La Seleccion for World Cup qualifiers with Belarus and Georgia this coming week.

“For any player, to be in the national team is the best,” considered Michu to reporters today.

“To wear the shirt of La Roja is to wear the shirt of the best team in the world. It’s a dream, all children dream of this and I feel privileged. It is my greatest achievement.

“It’s very difficult to get here. There are many players in Spain at a high standard and that are not here.

“The Coach seems like a very fair person and, within that difficulty that exists for all players to be called, he is just.

“I am leaning on [Juan] Mata because I know him, from our time at Oviedo. When you put on this shirt with the start on the chest, the feeling is indescribable.

“If I have the opportunity to play, I will adapt to what the Coach asks of me.

“Am I nervous to debut? You’re always nervous, but when you start playing with players at this level, it makes things easier.

“I have to take this opportunity to enjoy the moment and help my teammates to close out qualification to the World Cup.”

Michu was asked of former teammate Diego Costa’s chances of making the Spain squad in the future.

“I was with him at Rayo Vallecano and Celta Vigo. As a footballer he is in a great moment. He’s a good guy and I have much affection for him.

“I do not know if he will come, if he will be called. Diego Costa is a great guy and would have no problem here.”
