Atleti will negotiate for Diego

The father of Wolfsburg midfielder Diego says Atletico Madrid could be in Germany on Wednesday to negotiate his son’s signature.

Djair Cunha, who also acts as his agent, told Brazilian publication Lancenet that the Madrid club have always shown Diego great affection after his season-long loan there in 2011-12, and he would be open to a return.

“The club that has been talking to me lately is Atletico Madrid. On Wednesday the President will possibly be in Germany for talks with Wolfsburg executives,” Cunha is reported as saying.

Diego is out of contract in June 2014 and Wolfsburg Coach Dieter Hecking has already revealed that the Bundesliga outfit will ‘see if it makes sense’ to tie him to a new deal.

The Brazilian international, who won the Europa League whilst at the Vicente Calderon, is widely tipped to rejoin Los Colchoneros, as his father acknowledged.

“He can sign a pre-contract agreement in January. Atletico Madrid would pay some compensation to bring the deal forward and that’s something that will have to be discussed,” he asserted, while maintaining Atleti are not the only interested club as Flamengo and Botafogo are reportedly chasing the 28-year-old.

“I’ve attended to all the interested Brazilian clubs but there has been no agreement on the financial side.

“There is a large market for Diego in Europe, where they are able to meet our financial pretensions.

“We’ve also received an offer from the United Arab Emirates, although this is not the right time.

“The idea is to stay in Europe for another four years,” he added.
