Inigo ‘grateful’ for Spain call

Inigo Martinez says he is ‘pleased and grateful’ to have been called up to the Spain squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers.

The Real Sociedad centre-back entered into Vicente del Bosque’s squad for games with Belarus and Georgia after Raul Albiol had to withdraw through injury.

“To be back with the national team and with these teammates is the best thing possible, it is the greatest,” Inigo told reporters today.

“In the time that I was last here and in returning, it has been amazing for me. I am very happy and proud.

“After so long without being called up, you value it more. I have really wanted to help in qualification for the World Cup.

“The call-up was a big surprise to me because in the end I was not expecting it, whilst it is also a penalty for Albiol.

“In the end, one is a footballer and we understand about injuries, but I wish him well and I will enjoy these games.

“I am pleased and grateful for the call and I now want to help and support the team in these games that are so important.”
