Mel: We wanted to win

Pepe Mel admitted to Real Betis’ frustration in only drawing at Rijeka, but praised his players for their attitude.

Los Beticos fell behind to Leon Benko’s early effort before Cedrick Mabwati’s quick equaliser was followed by Betis’ sustained but unsuccessful pressure on the Croatians for the rest of the game.

“We expected more because we wanted to win,” mused Coach Mel post-match.

“It is true that the game has been complicated in that we have faced a very defensive opponent, but we were able to quickly equalise.

“Rijeka are an uncomfortable team. You see how the game has developed, more than happy I am satisfied for the effort we have produced and in a field that is complicated for an away team.

“In the second half we have been much better. We have not shrunk back and we have given a good account of ourselves.

“The next two games [against Vitoria SC] will determine the group. If we can take four of those six points then we will be on track in the group.”
