Sampaoli: Performance over result

Jorge Sampaoli praised his Chile side for their performance against Spain, which ‘lacked nothing’, even as La Roja equalised in the dying moments.

A last-gasp Jesus Navas goal saw the world and double European champions come away from Geneva with honours even, despite the South Americans having shaded play in the first half.

“It is true, the opposing team equalised into added on time, but I am very pleased with the performance of the Chilean national team,” Sampaoli reflected post-match.

“The team developed a football that allowed them to play as equals against the best team in the world.

“The truth is that I value the team’s performance well beyond the sadness of drawing right at the end.

“I think that at times we were superior to a rival of the hierarchy of Spain.

“I believe that in this game, we have not lacked anything. I think the Chilean people have to feel very well represented by these players, because the put on the pitch a hierarchy and ferocity that characterises them.

“This was a game without fear, and certainly that is worth something.”
