Toby Alderweireld has reflected on his surprise at Atletico Madrid’s interest in him this summer, but also his desire to see through the transfer.
The Belgian full-back was picked up late in the summer market from Ajax and this week was officially presented to the Spanish media.
“I’m very happy, even with the first day proving rather difficult, as I’m looking for a house,” joked Alderweireld to reporters this week.
“But I have been received by the Coach and my teammates very well. I’m going to give the best of me for this team and try to positively contribute to results.
“With the Coach I still haven’t spoken much, just the first contacts in the field. I know it will be difficult to get into this team, but I will give my best to play.
“Moreover, there are many games. I will be ready for when I get my opportunity.
“The first time I heard of Atletico’s interest it shocked me. I wanted to be here from the beginning, I wanted to play here.
“It’s good to have [Belgian international teammate Thibaut] Courtois here. It is important because if I have any problems then I can count on him.
“Pronouncing my surname? I like to be called Toby…”
