Negredo: We must maintain intensity

Alvaro Negredo has warned Spain not to drop their intensity in closing out qualification to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

La Roja are almost assured of a spot in the competition next summer, having defeated Finland 2-0 in Helsinki, just as second placed France could only draw their Group I game with Georgia.

“We knew it would be difficult. This time, thankfully, they were not as defensive as they were in the first game,” mused Spain’s scorer of their second goal against Finland, Negredo, to reporters this week.

“We were in control and the only chance they had was saved by Iker. Winning this game, just as France drawing theirs, has helped the group to relax more.

“But, we have to face the remaining two games with the same intensity. We must continue working the same towards earning a spot in Brazil.

“It’s hard to play against opponents that close up the space, each time we are tested more so, but we have a way forward to maintain.”

Negredo’s goal against Finland was his eighth with the national team, maintaining a record of a goal every other appearance.

“I try to make the most of the minutes that I get. Here there are many chances generated by the team’s play and it is easier to have this effectiveness in front of goal.

“I’m having a good run and hopefully I can keep being involved and helping the team.

“Could I go to the World Cup? The strikers live for goals and now I am scoring, but in a season many things can happen.

“Goals give you confidence, but it is not only that, there is much work to do to be able to fulfil the desire to make it to Brazil.

“I do not ask for explanations when I am called up to the squad nor when I am not.

“There are many colleagues who do well, so if Del Bosque believes that another player should come into the team instead of me, there would be no problems.”

Negredo was asked his view on the continued discussion on who should play in goal for Spain.

“There are three very good goalkeepers and others who are at a very high level. The national team’s goal is very well covered. “Iker has proven he is a great professional so we have no debate. We respect any decision.”
