Mario: I’ll take any opportunity

Mario Suarez says that he will look to make the most of any opportunity afforded to him by Spain this week.

In the absence of Xabi Alonso, Thiago Alcantara, Javi Martinez and Sergio Busquets through injury, the Atletico Madrid midfielder is in La Roja’s squad for this Friday’s World Cup qualifier away to Finland and next week’s friendly with Chile in Geneva.

Indications from Wednesday’s training session are that the 26-year-old is in contention for a starting berth.

“The Coach has tried several things. Hopefully I will play, that is my wish,” Mario reflected after the workout.

“But the important thing is that I contribute to the team, whether through playing or not, because it would mean helping the national team.”

The midfielder is joined by club colleagues Koke Resurreccion and David Villa in the squad.

“It has been a long time since three Atletico players have been in the squad. That’s because we are now doing things right, this is a reward for the club.

“I was not expecting to be on the list this time, I know it is hard to get into the team, but the Coach has trusted me and I give it everything.

“This is of course an opportunity for me because there are absences in my position.

“I am very grateful for the trust the Coach has placed in me and I will not disappoint him. If I have the opportunity, I will take it.”

Mario took a diplomatic view on the ongoing debate surrounding Iker Casillas.

“None of the goalkeepers in the national team are at my club, but it is clear that all three are great goalkeepers and are very close to being the best in the world.

“There is a debate, that is true, but I cannot add too much about it.”
