Diego Simeone has played down Atletico Madrid’s opening day win, insisting La Liga’s title is only between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Atleti picked up a 3-1 result at Sevilla on Sunday night thanks to a double from Diego Costa and a late goal from Cristian Rodriguez, to lead to questions for the Coach post-match about the team’s potential for a title challenge.
“No, absolutely not,” affirmed Simeone to reporters. “Madrid and Barcelona play in a different League.
“This is a boring championship. We will have to wait for a different television revenue distribution because right now, the League is only between two teams.
“Our performance? Maintaining the structure from previous years maintains us looking for the same goals.
“It is not easy because obviously at the start the League is very hard, but the team was able to respond perfectly to what I had asked of them.
“We were very accurate and in the first half we could have seen out the game. The way we responded in the second half was key. We were more aggressive and forceful in front of goal.”
