Simeone rules out title push

Diego Simeone has suggested that Atletico Madrid’s targets for next season do not include a push for the League title.

Last year saw Atleti hold a points advantage over Real Madrid for a stretch, before ultimately finishing in third behind their city rivals and runaway champions Barcelona.

“In Spain it is difficult to win the League,” mused Simeone this week.

“It is not realistic that we can fight for the League with Madrid and Barcelona.

“Our idea is to gradually progress and to one day fight for the championship.”

El Cholo was talking after Atleti’s 1-0 win over Sporting Cristal yesterday evening.

“I am happy with the team, despite the goals not arriving, as the situation was created asking for when they would come.

“In the first half we had some defensive issues but then improved it. We played well and felt comfortable.

“We are growing from previous games. I do not like to talk about the percentage of where the team is. I’m just saying that we leave with the feeling of progress and wit the idea that those who played did so to earn a spot in the team.”
