Montoya: “Madrid have signed well”

Barcelona defender Martin Montoya appeared at a Press conference this morning to talk about his future at the club and next season.

“I’m very happy with the playing time I got last year and this year I hope to get more minutes. I’ll have to work hard to earn a place,” he told gathered media.

“My aim is to remain here as I’m at the best team in the world. From being small I’ve always wanted to play here. I’ve got a year left on my contract so we’ll see.

“This year I hope to be a threat and intend to fight daily with Dani Alves for a regular place.”

The 22-year-old says believes eternal rivals Real Madrid will be even stronger next term and have made some good signings in Isco and Asier Illarramendi.

“Madrid have signed well with players from the lower categories of the national team. They are great players who are at Real Madrid’s level,” said Montoya, who commented on Thiago Alcantara’s departure and the degree of difficulty facing youngsters to break through at Barca, following Gerard Deolofeu and Rafinha opting to join Everton and Celta Vigo respectively for next season.

“It’s very tough to make the first team squad here because we have the best players. The youngsters need to be patient so that they don’t lose their physical fitness.

“Thiago will be one of the best players in the world and he has chosen what he believes is the right path for him.

“Sergi Roberto, who is also a great player, is right up there behind him and we hope he is a future central midfielder for Barca.”
