Ferreira: Malaga decision easy

Malaga centre-back Flavio Ferreira says it was an easy decision for him to join the club from Academica Coimbra in the summer.

Ferreira [pictured, right] earned rave reviews in the Portuguese League last term and the responsibility of filling the position vacated by Atletico Madrid-bound Martin Demichelis could now fall on his young shoulders.

However, the 21-year-old says he had no hesitation in opting to join the Costa del Sol outfit in a €500,000 transfer.

“It was through some business people that I first heard of Malaga’s interest. To accept it was very easy,” he admitted in an interview with AS.

“I’d heard of Malaga, the city, and that the team were doing well in La Liga. Therefore, I decided to accept their offer as it was a good one and a step forward in my career.

“There are some other Portuguese players here and that makes my settling in easier and faster.

“I appreciate the effort being made by not only the club but by the other players, who have already made me feel like one of them.”

Ferreira, who scored once in his 43 League appearances with Academica, can also operate as a defensive midfielder, yet he acknowledges his preferred position is in central defence.

“I’m more a central defender than a midfielder but I’m not the best person to analyse my qualities. I work every day to try and reach the top and now I’m at a great club.

“In any case, I don’t like to talk about myself but instead prefer to do my talking out on the pitch,” said Ferreira, who revealed new Los Blanquiazules boss Bernd Schuster had given him some words of advice.

“He welcomed me to the club then told me that we all have to work together, which is the only way we’ll be successful.”
