Torres: Team ahead of individual

Fernando Torres has reflected on his ‘luck’ in scoring from the bench for Spain, but has played down the debate over the strikers.

The Chelsea man saw Roberto Soldado picked ahead of him for Sunday’s final Group B match against Nigeria, before he replaced the Valencia striker to score La Roja’s second in an eventual 3-0 win.

“I’ve been lucky enough to make it 2-0. In the first half we had enough chances and early in the second half it seemed were losing control,” commented Torres afterwards.

“But I think it was a matter of time before the second goal. Eventually, we closed out the game.

“You come on and the first ball you touch is a goal so you are happy, but I think I said at the beginning of the tournament that this team has always been at all times for the group, so that everyone has time.

“If you are Jordi, Andres, Villa. No matter who you are. When you are on the bench and look at the people who are playing, ‘playing or not’, it will be the same.”

The game was played out in hot and humid conditions once more.

“Of course, my teammates who played since the beginning of the game must be tired. It must have been very difficult.

“Those who have played less have also noticed it. They have not had the freshness of others.”
