Torres: I’m now a Tahiti fan

Fernando Torres paid tribute to Tahiti for their efforts and asserted that Spain were not disrespectful in beating them 10-0.

In this second Group B match of the Confederations Cup, La Roja ran out comfortable winners, thanks in part to four goals from the Chelsea forward.

“You have to speak of the respect that they deserve,” Torres reflected post-match.

“Many times we experience that teams at a lower level try to disrupt the game, be aggressive…and Tahiti is a clear example of wanting to play football.

“It would have been disrespectful for us to have lowered our level.

“We have been respectful, we have not intended to play with any extra frills, but to play well, simple and to score goals.

“I am a fan even more of this team. It is enviable that they play with passion and joy.

“It is great that a team plays well and does not give away free-kicks. They were trying to play, whilst aware of their shortcomings, but they did not lose enthusiasm.

“It is normal that the fans were with them. I am now a Tahiti fan.”
