Morata picks up Golden Boot

Alvaro Morata’s four goals for Spain was enough to earn him the Golden Boot as top scorer in the UEFA Under-21 Championship this summer.

Out in Israel, the Real Madrid striker scored in each of his first four games for La Rojita, with three of those from the bench, to finish the tournament Spain have won on four goals.

Awarded the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer, the 20-year-old reflected on his exploits and his country’s success.

“Yes, it isn't easy, especially when you're coming off the bench, but I got the luck,” Morata told UEFA’s official website.

“I'm delighted to win this tournament and the Golden Boot and I want to thank all my teammates as it wouldn't be possible without them.

“We're delighted to be honest – it's a great feeling [to win the Euros]. We had to take this one last step and now we're European champions.

“It's a European final and the game started at a really high tempo – the two goals came really quickly. "It's a final and it was played at a level to match.”

Morata did not score in the final, whilst teammate and captain Thiago Alcantara managed a hat-trick.

“Yes, the truth is he looked like the No 9 out there. I couldn't believe the way he jumped like that [for the opening goal].

“We've managed to win and give something to our [injured] teammate Sergio Canales. We wish he'd been able to be here with us but that's football and I'm sure he'll have other opportunities to lift this trophy.

“To be honest, with the Spanish U17s I was in the team beaten in the semi-finals of the World Cup, but everything else, every one I've played, we've won. Let's see if we can keep that going.”

The Silver Boot and Bronze Boot for the competition’s next highest goalscorers were won by Thiago and Isco respectively.
