‘Spain unquestionably are superior’

Oscar Tabarez has placed the pressure this Sunday firmly on Spain, labelling Vicente del Bosque’s men ‘unquestionably superior’ to his Uruguay side.

The two countries begin their respective Confederations Cup campaigns this weekend in Group B’s opening fixture.

Whilst it is a meeting between the world and double European champions and the Copa America holders, the South Americans’ Coach has made clear where expectation lies.

“Spain are a team that are great in ball possession, which they impose upon opponents. Unquestionably they are a superior team to us,” Tabarez told reporters in his pre-match address.

“We have the recent work of the friendly played against them in February in Qatar, when there was a moment that we were playing level with them.

“We are arriving for a party and we will try to make ourselves seen, so we will not sit back. We have a little hope and we will push forward with respect and belief.

“It is exhilarating to start against the world and European champions.

“To beat Nigeria would see us take a big step towards the semi-finals, without neglecting Tahiti.

“Our aspiration is to reach the next round, but we must work hard and well.”
