Lugano: Spain are favourites

Uruguay captain Diego Lugano has labelled Sunday’s opponents Spain as ‘the best team in the world’ and favourites for the Confederations Cup.

La Roja will open their tournament campaign this summer against the reigning Copa America champions in Recife, Brazil.

“It is logical to say that [they are the best],” reflected Lugano in anticipation.

“Spain are favourites, they are the best team in the world, they are the champions and Uruguay are less so in their prime.

“They are a team that if you allow them to have the ball, you will not see it anymore. Spain are superior to Brazil in their treatment of the ball. Then it is Brazil and then Argentina.

“It is not the case with Uruguay, who from the start teach its children to defend.”

Uruguay have seen preparations for the weekend fixture hit by weather conditions forcing the postponement and relocation of training sessions this week.

“We are not after preferential treatment, but we can think that the players will be given minimal facilities to train and facilitate the preparation of the team.”
