‘La Liga’s importance maybe forgotten’

Pedro Rodriguez has reflected that perhaps the importance of the League was lost in Barcelona’s strong advantage held through the season.

Barca won the 2012-13 League title having held a significant advantage over first Atletico Madrid and then Real Madrid through the course of the season.

However, defeat to Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final and to Bayern Munich in the same round of the Champions League saw the term tail off disappointingly.

For Pedro, perhaps the disappointment was borne out of forgetting the achievement in La Liga.

“Maybe for most of the season, we have had the points advantage in the League, it seemed that we had almost decided it and it was then not given much importance,” the Barca forward told reporters today.

“In other tournaments that are less important, with due respect, they were given more importance, but the League marks the team’s consistency through a season.

“It was important to win it, with 100 points and many goals. We are very happy that we did.”

Pedro was asked of Victor Valdes’ decision to not renew his contract beyond its June 2014 expiry.

“It’s very bad news. He has been here for many years. For me he is the best in the world. A person with a lot of weight in the dressing room.

“It is a shame that he will leave, but he has made this decision. We have to support him, for everything that he has done, for what he has given us. I wish him well wherever he will go.”

Pedro is currently on international duty with Spain, but was an unused substitute for Saturday’s 2-1 win over Haiti, which saw Iker Casillas make his return to competitive football after almost six months.

“I see him motivated. He has gone through an uncomfortable situation, but his track record supports him. We are all with him and we are happy that he is back happy with us. These things happen in football, but Iker is a great professional and continues to train so.”
