Alvarez’ Espanyol exit confirmed

Espanyol President Joan Collet has confirmed that team captain Cristian Alvarez will be leaving the club this summer at the end of his contract.

The goalkeeper has been widely expected to take this step ever since his agent revealed back in February that he did not intend to renew his deal at Cornella-El Prat beyond its expiry this summer.

However, reports recently had it that the player’s agent had met with sporting director Oscar Perarnau to attempt to reach a late agreement.

But, with a change in legislation pushing Alvarez’ tax rate from 24 per cent up to 56 per cent, an agreement could not be reached.

Club President Collet has confirmed that this is the case, with the club captain’s inevitable exit bringing to an end a five-year stint.

“There are several players who are accepting contracts, but Cristian Alvarez will surely not be in that group,” Collet briefly commented on TV3 this week.
