Alonso undergoes surgery

Contrary to reports earlier this week, Real Madrid medics have opted for Xabi Alonso to undergo surgery on a persistent groin injury.

The midfielder has struggled with the complaint for a number of months and was forced to withdraw from consideration for Spain’s Confederations Cup squad this summer as a result.

Whilst yesterday it was understood in Spain that this was enough to allow Madrid medics to treat Alonso’s injury more conservatively, the club have today announced that the 31-year-old underwent surgery in Munich.

It is not yet stipulated how long he will be out for, but it is estimated that this sort of intervention can sideline a player for up to six weeks, putting his fitness for the start of Madrid’s preseason work on July 15 at slight risk.
