Martinez ready to step up

Javi Martinez has declared that he is in the best possible physical shape and that he is ready to play to his best for Spain.

Returned to the national team after a brief hiatus, the Bayern Munich midfielder has been selected in the 23-man squad for the Confederations Cup, but with the request from Vicente del Bosque to give more.

“I am ready for what the Coach wants. If I get to play,” commented Martinez to reporters this week.

“This is a group of 23 where anyone can do well, but if I am picked I am sure I will be at the level.

“I’m very happy to be back, with these great players and to contest for the Confederations Cup, it is extremely gratifying. Physically I am at the best point of the season, after an unusual year [in reference to a disrupted preseason].

“The preseason I had was to reach a certain level at the most important part of the season and currently I am at my best.”

This week sees La Roja face Haiti in the first of their two warm-up fixtures prior to heading out to Brazil.

“Haiti are among the top 60 in the world, according to the FIFA World Ranking. They are a physically tough team and we will be required to compete.

“It will be a great workout and a great game.

“The game will serve us to reach our highest level at the Confederations Cup.”
