Mel backs Ruben Castro

Pepe Mel has said that he and the rest of Real Betis are behind Ruben Castro, just as he assures that Los Beticos deserve a place in Europe for next year.

Castro was arrested earlier this week on the allegation of assaulting an ex-partner and has provisionally been handed a restraining order.

“Everyone in the dressing room and at the club have absolute certainty that the boy is innocent of what he has been accused of,” assured Mel to reporters this week.

“That is our belief and this is because we know him. We have nothing else to say. The process will come and we are sure that it will demonstrate that the boy is innocent.”

Mel was talking ahead of Betis’ final game of the season away to Levante. Los Beticos need a point to be assured of seventh place and Europa League football next year, whilst Levante back in 11th are chasing ninth place and a possible Europa League entrance through the back door.

“Perhaps it shows that La Liga is not the best League in the world. I do not know our distance over Levante, but it is curious that we still lack that point and that Levante also still have their chances.

“What is important is what happens and this has to have a happy ending. A team that from 38 days of the season has spent 32 in the European places deserves to go to Europe.”
