Jemez ‘proud’ to stay at Rayo

Paco Jemez has enthused at having finally signed on to stay at Rayo Vallecano, commenting that the move is one he is proud of.

The Coach was speculated as on his way out of Vallecas this summer at the expiry of his contract, with rumours of interest from Malaga as negotiations on a renewal with Rayo stalled.

However, the club confirmed earlier this week that their tactician, who has them on the verge of European qualification pending an appeal over a UEFA licence, has signed on for two more years.

“I am happy because I will continue where I have wanted to. Here I have worked as I wanted and although the matter has been delayed more than I would have hoped so, that’s something that does not matter. What matters is that I am continuing at Rayo, which I am proud of.

“Other renewals this summer? Little by little they are doing things and the club is already looking to next year. Piti? We will do everything we can to keep him too, but I do not know if that will be enough.

“He’s earned a new deal, he has scored 17 goals and has been one of the most important players and that is worth something.

“But the idea now is that nobody relaxes because we still have a game in which the focus is to bring joy to the fans.”

That game is at home to Athletic Bilbao, who effectively have nothing to play for.

“If it was another team, they would play only for pride, but under Bielsa and with those players, I do not imagine Athletic will be relaxed.

“We have the motivation of playing for points. We want to reach the end with 55 points. Athletic will not make it easy.”
