Simeone convinces Tiago

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has managed to persuade midfielder Tiago to pen a new deal with the club.

Marca maintains that the Portuguese international, 32, initially rejected an offer two weeks ago, one that was much reduced owing to his age, but it appears that Simeone intervened after it was revealed the player had considered an offer from Turkey.

It is believed that Tiago has now been awarded a contract satisfying both parties as he is happy in Madrid. There was also the prospect of playing in the Champions League next season, one that proved stronger than the lure of a two-year contract and more money in Istanbul.

The idea is that Tiago signs his contract when La Liga comes to a close this weekend after Atletico’s game at Real Zaragoza, when he will return to Madrid before heading off for his summer vacation.

Tiago will thus face his fifth season with Los Rojiblancos following his transfer from Juventus on a permanent deal in July 2011, having been at the Vicente Calderon on loan the previous six months.
