‘Madrid too big for Mourinho’

Former Real Madrid President Lorenzo Sanz believes that Los Blancos were simply too big for Coach Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese is leaving the Santiago Bernabeu after a mixed three years in charge, with 2011-12’s record-breaking League win followed up by a trophyless 2012-13.

“Mourinho's time here has been too short. I honestly think Madrid was too big for Mourinho,” reflected Sanz to Marca this week.

“He'll go down in history as just another Real Madrid manager. I don't think he'll be remembered as one of the best or as the best.”

On from Mourinho’s departure, the club are expected to dip into the transfer market to also make changes to the playing staff.

“Due to the prices being bandied about I wouldn't sign Neymar or Bale. Football is about feelings and a president that doesn't understand that is making a mistake.”

Sanz was President at Madrid from 1985 to 1995, but ruled out the possibility of returning this summer to stand against Florentino Perez.

“I don't fancy standing for the elections at all. I feel like staying calm, watching what's happening and giving my opinion on what the best course of action is.”
