Atletico Madrid are reportedly contemplating a surprise summer move for Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol.
Diego Simeone is seen as having identified that Atleti will need to bring in a fourth centre-back to improve the squad’s depth ahead of Champions League and League pushes next season.
To join Joao Miranda, Diego Godin and Cata Diaz, Los Colchoneros are reportedly interested in city rivals Madrid’s Albiol.
The 27-year-old has struggled for playing time at the Santiago Bernabeu and is expected to leave the club this summer, with former side Valencia said to be hoping to bring him back to Mestalla.
However, Marca say that Atleti are also in the hunt and reportedly have an advantage in being prepared to match Albiol’s earning from Madrid of €1.8m a year.
The defender is seen as open to the move too, if he can be given a guarantee of first team action.
Atleti reportedly may be prepared to offer this, as they are apparently open to offers to sell, with Simeone’s authorisation, one of Miranda and Godin, should a suitable offer come in over the summer.
