Hierro: We must recognise Iker

Fernando Hierro has indicated that Iker Casillas’ situation at Real Madrid with Coach Jose Mourinho must be split into sporting and non-sporting context.

The club legend has reflected on the ongoing saga at the Santiago Bernabeu that sees the team’s No 1 from the last decade out on the sidelines amid rumours of a difficult relationship with Mourinho.

“I think we should leave this alone, it is the way things are,” commented Hierro to reporters this week when asked for his view.

“I have the feeling that you have to separate the two, the situation that is sporting and the other that is not.

“The important thing is that people recognise who Iker is, what is in his past, his history, and what he represents for the club and for Spanish football. The rest is outside of the sporting context.

“He’s been out with an injury, he needs time and the goalkeeper position is peculiar, particular, and a goalkeeper must be active because something can always happen and you have to be available.

“Iker means a lot to this club, to Spanish football and the decision to play him or not is that of a Coach who has to choose between other goalkeepers.”

The retired centre-back reflected on Madrid’s upcoming Champions League test with Borussia Dortmund.

“They practically have all the players available and Madrid’s players are full of confidence and they know they are two games away from a European final.

“Madrid are dangerous and I hope and trust that we see an all-Spanish final against Barcelona. For Spanish football and for both teams representing our country, a final between them would be great.”
