Del Nido: Medel feels responsible

Sevilla President Jose Maria del Nido revealed that midfielder Gary Medel is ‘well aware’ he let the team down last week.

Medel has been handed a two-game ban for his red card picked up during Friday evening’s eventual 3-3 draw at rivals Real Betis.

In the 55th minute with the score at 3-2 to Los Nervionenses, the Chilean lashed out at Jose Canas after a push.

According to his President, though, he is more than aware that he let his teammates down, as he relayed a conversation between two after Wednesday’s city lunch event that the club attended.

“When the meal ended I formally invited the players back to my house and Gary asked me then how much he was going to get fined,” Del Nido recalled to reporters this week.

“This indicate that he feels responsible for what happened. Do not crucify him, these things happen in football.

“He has a splendid future ahead of him, but he must learn from his mistakes. It would not surprise anyone if I were to say that two Italian clubs follow him, two English and one German.

“That demonstrates that he is at an international level. In Chile he is an idol. If he can hold on to that temper when playing, Medel will remain a great player.”
