‘When Espanyol are safe…’

Christian Stuani has declared that as soon as Espanyol are safe from relegation that they should sign Coach Javier Aguirre to a new contract.

The Mexican Coach took over in late November with the Catalans bottom of the table and he has since taken them up to 12th place, where they currently sit 12 points clear of the dropzone.

For striker Stuani, who scored in the weekend’s 2-2 draw with Real Sociedad, negotiations over renewing Aguirre’s contract beyond its June expiry must be a priority.

“I would renew his deal as soon as survival is secured,” Stuani told reporters today.

“Aguirre is a great Coach, with experience and the team is very comfortable with him working day to day. It is a pleasure.

“For us, we must ensure that our League status is sealed as soon as possible. Our mindset is to go game by game and nobody will relax in the dressing room or anything like that.

“Up to now nothing has been given to us for free and each point we pick up is worth its value in gold.

“Yesterday’s point against Real Sociedad was very good, vital. They are a team to be reckoned with, with a very defined style of play, and they are fourth in the League because they deserve to be.

“They have the respect of their opponents.

“We had a hard time getting out. We were pressed a lot and the team suffered a bit. We tried to defend the 2-1 lead, but the opponent had much possession and great mobility in midfield.”
