Stuani happy to remain at Espanyol

Espanyol striker Christian Stuani says he is delighted to be staying at the club after penning a contract extension until 2018.

The Uruguayan has also seen his release clause increased to €20m and is hoping for a double celebration when Espanyol take on Athletic Bilbao in the return leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final on Wednesday, having drawn 1-1 at San Mames.

“This is special and I’m very grateful to the club for putting their faith in me, not just in renewing my contract but for everything they’ve done for me since I arrived,” remarked Stuani at an event held at the club’s Power8 Stadium.

“I’ve always felt the affection of the fans and I thank God for this opportunity because it’s an honour to wear the Espanyol shirt.

“I hope we can have a double celebration on Wednesday. This will be a momentous game and I’m looking forward to playing in it and winning.

“For us it’s not just a semi-final, it’s a final. It’s a massive game for Espanyol and all the people connected with the club.

“As players we are aware of what’s at stake and we’ll be giving 100 per cent against Athletic. The away goal gives us a slight advantage but it will be important to remain focused and try to score.

“This is a game we have to win,” he concluded.
