Benzema downplays whistles

Karim Benzema has downplayed the negative reception he received from France fans during last night’s defeat to Spain.

The Real Madrid striker, who has endured criticism in his homeland for his form with the national team, yesterday surpassed 1,000 minutes of game-time with Les Bleus since last scoring.

When substituted during the second half of yesterday’s 2014 World Cup qualifying defeat to Spain, the Stade de France crowd made clear their frustration at the 25-year-old.

“The whistles? These things happen in football, nothing more,” reflected Benzema to reporters, when asked for his reaction to the negative reception.

“I think that overall we played a good game, we were able to put a team as great as Spain under pressure, especially during the first half.”

With three games of qualifying to go, France sit second in Group I, a point back on La Roja.
