Villa set for Spain start

David Villa is increasingly seen as set to start for Spain on Friday evening for their World Cup qualifier against Finland.

The Barcelona striker, who is his country’s all-time leading goalscorer, has been used in attack during both training sessions held so far this week under Vicente del Bosque.

It is seen that the 31-year-old is almost assured of a starting berth at El Molinon on Friday, a stadium home to his former club Sporting Gijon.

Alongside Villa, Cesc Fabregas has played in both sessions in an attacking trident, but the third position has seen Del Bosque so far alternate between Pedro Rodriguez and David Silva.

Meanwhile, midfield may see Xabi Alonso absent as he continues to struggle with a groin injury, so Sergio Busquets could be a single pivot, supported by Andres Iniesta and Santi Cazorla.

With Casillas absent from the squad through injury for the first time since August 2007, Victor Valdes is speculated to be deputising in his place.
