‘To win at the Calderon a feat’

Philippe Montanier recognised the work and achievement met by his Real Sociedad side in defeating Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

Xabi Prieto’s debatably offside goal settling matters in La Real’s favour for a 1-0 win that ended Atleti’s run of 14 consecutive League wins in front of their own fans.

“To win here we needed a great defensive performance. Especially after conceding three goals in the last League game,” reflected Montanier afterwards.

“We have done a very thorough job. We had the ball and we have maintained our position on the pitch. That’s the best way to defend. We took our time to counter-attack and we have been very disciplined.

“It is true that winning at the Calderon is a feat. But we still have very difficult games to come. This victory does not speak of the future of the team.

“Let’s face things day by day. We have to enjoy this win and then think of our remaining games. After 27 weeks of the season there is still nothing decided.

“Was the goal offside? It is hard for me to judge everything. I want to see a replay of those actions when in real time, because they are so fast that it is impossible.

“But let the referee do his job. The most important thing for us is victory.”
