Xabi Prieto conceded that Real Sociedad ‘had a bit of luck’ in defeating Atletico Madrid, but also pointed to their defensive performance.
La Real ended Atletico’s run of 14 consecutive wins in the League at the Calderon that ran back to the end of last season, thanks to Prieto’s solitary strike early in the second half.
Replays suggested that the goal should not have stood though, with the midfielder caught offside at the start of the counter-attacking play.
“Atletico were very strong in defence. We learned we had to wait for our chances, but we also had a bit of luck,” commented Prieto post-match.
“The other day we conceded three goals at home. Today we wanted to have a solid defence and we succeeded.
“Our away form? At first we had a hard time playing away from home, but we have improved, especially in defence, whilst in attack we have had people doing a lot of damage, quickly.
“It’s pretty cool to be in the Champions League positions. If at the beginning of the season someone told us that we would have thought them mad. Hopefully we can stay in this position.”
