Astiazaran to step down

The Spanish Football League President Jose Luis Astiazaran has confirmed that he will step down from his position next month.

Elections are due to be held at the end of April to determine the latest official to lead the organisation, but after eight years at the helm, Astiazaran has confirmed he will not stand for re-election.

“These have been years of great intensity and relevance, working at the LFP,” read Astiazaran’s statement on the LFP’s official website today.

“We have covered many of the objectives that were undertaken, by mandate of the clubs, since I took office eight years ago.

“It is time to hand over to another President for the LFP, with the majority support as necessary for the management of this institution.

“The new President will have my full support and I will work to ensure that the transition is framed by warmth and normalcy for the benefit of our football.”

Current Vice-President Javier Tebas has already confirmed his intention to take the position.
