Alves: Barca won’t play for 0-0

Dani Alves has promised that Barcelona will not play for a 0-0 against Real Madrid in the Cup, as ‘it is not in our character’.

Barca host Madrid in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Tuesday evening, with the advantage of the away goal, after the 1-1 result in the first leg.

Even so, it is not an advantage the Catalans will be resting on, according to their attacking full-back.

“We do not know how to play 0-0 for our characteristics. We play to win, not to defend a result. We will attack from the first minute,” declared Alves in an interview with Mundo Deportivo published today.

“Our defensive record recently? It’s something we have to improve, but if you win then the objective is achieved, it is not prohibited to concede goals.

“We expect a Madrid tomorrow that, despite the fact they are doing not so well in the League, will come around because their season is played in the Cup and Champions League, because of the significant difference in the League. It will cost us a lot to progress in the tie.”

Alves was asked of the reception he expects at the Camp Nou, after complaining of racist chants during the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“That should not be the question, because I have spent 10 years in Spain and it is everywhere. It’s not because it was the Bernabeu or because it was me.

“To me, love me or hate me, there is no middle ground. I reported it at the time because I had had enough, but I’ve seen it elsewhere in my 10 years in Spain.

“I never considered leaving the pitch. Those who have to work on this issue are those in power.”

The Brazilian has more than once been quoted as urging compatriot Neymar to join him at Barcelona.

“I do not know if he can reach the levels of Messi, but he will pretty much be there for the qualities that he has. Matching Messi will be difficult, but there have been players over time and he can do it.

“Neymar coming here? He knows what is here because he will have seen all the reports, but I cannot catch him and bring him here. If I could have, I would have. It is up to him.

“He knows what is needed, with the agreement that he has, which is to come here later, but if I were him, to get well for the World Cup, which is our hope, he would improve his game now, tactically a lot, for us to use.

“Also, he would come to a team that very much fits his qualities.

“City’s move for him? I do not believe it is a question of money, because staying in Brazil he would earn much more than many stars over here.

“It is a matter of choice, where he looks most at ease…he alone must be allowed to decide.”
