Morata: These things happen

Alvaro Morata accepted his early substitution for Real Madrid, instead choosing to focus on his first goal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Castilla striker opened the scoring for Madrid on Sunday evening against Rayo Vallecano, before Sergio Ramos’ second confirmed the 2-0 result.

Ramos’ red card soon after then saw that Morata had to be withdrawn in favour of Raul Albiol on the half-hour mark.

“There are times when this sort of thing happens, that’s life and I’m happy because the team won. It happened to Callejon recently,” reflected Morata at the end.

“The match was set up well with two goals in the first minutes. Then these are things that happen and we need to accept them. We know the criteria that the referees follow and that it is up to them.

“It is always difficult to play with a man less and Rayo do it very well. They are a great team and they lacked a little punch. They will be up their fighting for a place in Europe.

“I am very proud to be in this squad and play in matches like this. I am learning and I am in no hurry. I need to take it step by step.

“I didn’t expect to be in the starting XI and when the Coach told me it made me extremely happy. To start a match at the Bernabeu and score my first goal here is incredible.”
