Mario Suarez: I was nervous

Mario Suarez conceded that in the build-up to Spain’s game with Uruguay and then sitting on the substitutes’ bench he felt nervous, until he debuted.

The Atletico Madrid man was a late call-up to Vicente del Bosque’s squad for the injured Xabi Alonso and came off the bench in the eventual 3-1 win over Uruguay in Qatar to make his international debut.

“I am very happy. It has only been two days but I have been welcomed,” enthused the 25-year-old to reporters afterwards.

“I noticed [yesterday] in training and during when the game started that I was nervous, as usual, but once you get the ball and start to play and you get the support, that makes you comfortable.

“You see [Spain’s players] on television and they seem to have a lot of quality, but when you are inside, that seems even greater.

“This is a shirt that I will keep, for my family, who are all special. Hopefully there are many more to come and I will have to make room for them.”
